The actionReplay line of unlicensed console manipulation tools allowed a user to manipulate a console’s memory state at a very low level - thus allowing the memory that held (for example) the number of player lives to be raised or lowered as the player wished. The actionReplay cartridge for the Sega Saturn also allowed game state saving and the removal of regional lockouts.
