‘The BBC Micro is only 16 inches long’
The BBC Micro was a BBC branded micro computer designed and manufactured by Acorn Computers. Created as the core hardware element of the BBC’s Computer Literacy Project, the BBC Micro featured in a number of BBC television programs that aimed to increase British computer literacy and, due to this, was often the computer of choice for British schools.
The BBC Micro was built around a MOS 6502 CPU running at 2MHz, 16-32KB of RAM , and a colour-capable Motorola 6845 graphics chip. The BBC Micro was highly expandable and could be expanded with hardware ranging from tape and disk drives to printers and network adapters for the Econet networking system.
Initially priced at 235 GBP for the Model A version and 335 GBP for the Model B version (significantly more than the peer ZX Spectrum), it positioned itself as the upmarket, premium micro computer of the British market and it’s links as the default micro for the BBC’s Computer Literacy project helped it to sell around 1.5 million units.
