The Hardlock E-Y-E was a combined hardware-software DRM solution to help reduce losses due to software piracy. A utility program would encrypt an executable and, at runtime, that executable would request a decryption key from a per-customer dongle. A system without the dongle would thus be unable to run the protected application.
