Founded in 1994, GeoCities was a web host aimed at early internet adopters. Free to both view and create sites, GeoCities’ operations were funded by mandatory banner ads and popups. In 1999 GeoCities was sold to Yahoo! In 2009, GeoCities closed for all users outside of Japan and, in 2019 GeoCities’ final Japanese remnant closed for all users.
