UUNet was an early Tier 1 internet backbone provider. Founded in 1987, by 1999 UUNET had been sold to WorldCom who, by 2001, fully merged the former UUNet brand into WorldCom’s portfolio. After an accounting scandal during the DotCom crash, in 2002 WorldCom entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. By 2006 the remnants of UUNet had been sold to Verizon Communications.
