‘We fit the Whole Earth on a CD-ROM’
Broderbund’s The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog was a 1989 CDROM spin-off of the Whole Earth Catalog, a counterculture magazine and product catalog. The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog was notable in that it was both an early CDROM title and a pre-world-wide-web hypermedia guide. Built with Apple’s HyperCard, The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog contained a range of reviews, product and store details, and extracts across a number of disparate topics. It also contained audio extracts and imagery. The November 1989 issue of MacWorld awarded The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog second place in its ‘Best Commercial Stack’ hypercard stack awards.
In 1989 The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog had a suggested retail price of 149.95USD. A live version of the The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog can be viewed at the Internet Archive.
