‘The desk-top that’s not desk-bound’

The Wren Executive System was a mid-1980s ‘luggable’ computer with a targeted price point of 1,000 GBP plus sales tax. Based around a Z-80 CPU, the Wren cam equipped with 64KB (expandable to 256KB) of RAM, two 190K single sided floppy drives, a 67 key qwerty keyboard, and a 80 character by 24 line LCD display. External interfaces included a parallel printer port, a serial port and a modem capable of running at 75 bits ups and 1200 bits down. Interestingly, this model was capable of interfacing with the [Prestel] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestel) interactive text service. Weighing in at a slight 13KG, the Wren was designed to be passively cooled. A handle was provided to assist in moving the machine. On the software side, the Wren Executive System ran the CP/M Plus operating system.

The Wren Executive System was positively reviewed in the June 1984 edition of Practical Computing. The Centre for Computing History in Cambridge currently holds a fully functional Wren Executive System.
