Launched in September 2003, the AMD Athlon 64 FX processor was the prosumer variant of AMD’s new 64 bit x86-64 processor line. The FX processor was capable of running both 32 and 64 bit x86 operating systems and applications though, in reality, most users would still be running an entirely 32 bit environment - probably based around the 32 release of Windows XP - even as they took advantage of the FX 64’s more performative hardware. More expensive than the mainstream consumer Athlon 64 family but without the full set of enterprise features (multiprocessor support etc), the AMD Athlon 64 FX was a niche product.
