‘Get LYCOS… or GET LOST’
Founded by Michael Mauldin of Carnegie Mellon University in 1994, Lycos launched in April 1995. In April 1996 Lycos - along with Yahoo and Excite - undertook one of the first search engine/web directory IPOs. This somewhat misguided late 1996 alt/skatepunk themed advert was targeted at the readers of Mondo 2000 - a 1990s cyberculture magazine who’s readers were already likely familiar with the rather more dour reality of the actual Lycos site.
