‘The CPC464 is an enthusiast’s dream come true.’
The Amstrad CPC 464 was a British microcomputer first released in 1984. As with many British microcomputers of the time, the CPC 464 was based around a Zilog Z80 processor running at 4MHz coupled with 64KB of RAM and a built-it tape drive. It was also capable of producing limited sound. Basic software functionality was provided by AMSDOS, a proprietary OS also developed by Amstrad.
The CPC 464 was born out of a desire for Alan Sugar’s Amstrad to diversity out of the budget Hifi market into the budget computer market. Priced at only 249GBP with a green-screen monitor, the aim was to make it a simple and cheap impulse purchase for those new to computing. A range of peripherals - including joysticks and a tape drive - were also available. The Amstrad CPC 464 sold well and developed a reasonably large software library.
A Retro Collective video covering the history and repair of an Amstrad CPC 464 - including the disk drive - can be seen below.
