‘The great 386 race is over.’

The Am386 was a reverse-engineered reimplementation of Intels 80386. Prior to AMD’s development of the Am386, AMD has been a second source supplier to IBM of Intel’s own 8086/80186/80286 designs, a practice that ended 1987. The engineering effort resulted in a functional product by the end of 1989, however litigation by Intel delayed launch until 1991. On release the Am386 was viewed as speed and price-competitive with Intel’s own 386 designs.
