mFactory’s mTropolis was a mid to late 1990s development environment that focused on the rapid production of multimedia titles that targeted both the Windows and Macintosh environments. mTropolis comprised of two elements; an authoring tool for development, and a runtime to be distributed with the finished product. Development was targeted at a hight level than many engines of the time., allowing the product design team to be balanced away from the technical aspects and more towards the creative side.
Titles developed include How to Draw the Marvel Way, “If I Were…” an Astronaut, Muppet Treasure Island, S.P.Q.R.: The Empire’s Darkest Hour, and Obsidian. Starship Titanic was originally developed within mTropolis however development issues lead the game switching to alternate products.
A detailed dive into mTropolis can be found in Game Developer Magazine’s March 1998 issue.
